Andy Birrell is regarded by clients and adversaries as one of the top trial lawyers in the State of Minnesota.

Best known for his high profile representation of individuals and corporations in the criminal law area, Mr. Birrell has received virtually every recognition a criminal trial lawyer can earn. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers—an honor limited to the top 1% of lawyers in the State. He has been nationally certified as a criminal trial specialist since 1989 by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He is the Chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association committee on criminal law specialization and was the first lawyer in Minnesota to be certified by the Minnesota State Bar Association as a Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist.

Mr. Birrell is available to represent clients in all phases of criminal law and related matters from grand jury investigations through appeals in federal and state courts throughout the United States. He has handled every type of criminal law matter and has won jury acquittals for his clients in cases ranging from murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, criminal sexual conduct to violations of federal law to many other types of charges. These matters include the most formidable of legal challenges. For example, in 2010, Mr. Birrell represented a person indicted in U.S. District Court on a death penalty eligible matter and persuaded United States Attorney General Eric Holder not to allow the U.S. Attorney to seek the death penalty. Mr. Birrell represents various clients including major corporations, doctors, lawyers, business people, police officers and others.

Mr. Birrell also practices in the appellate courts. He has argued before the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., the federal appeals court and has won reversals of convictions and orders for new trials in both the Minnesota Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

A former prosecutor, Mr. Birrell contributes to his profession by presenting seminars to lawyers on all aspects of federal and state criminal law and procedure and ethics.

Mr. Birrell also tries civil cases and has obtained verdicts and settlements for clients in excess of a million dollars in personal injury matters, and has won trials for clients in business disputes, tax court, professional malpractice and family court.
